​I think its obvious that, in today's society, a drivers license is an absolute necessity. Imagine how your life would change without the ability to drive legally. A D.U.I. conviction (same thing as a DWI), or one for refusal to submit to the breath test, will result in a loss of license and/or installation of the Ignition Interlock from three months to eight years, as well as jail for up to 180 days, depending on how may prior convictions you have as well as other circumstances. In addition, you face a yearly surcharge of $1,000.00, or more, for three years, substantially increased insurance rates, possible ignition interlock and attendance at an alcohol resource center.

If you are found guilty of a D.U.I, in a school zone, or you injure someone in a accident, while you're intoxicated, the penalties are much more severe.

In addition to D.U.I., under the N.J. Motor Vehicle Code, there are many circumstances where your "privilege" to drive can be suspended or otherwise adversely affected. In certain circumstances, even minor traffic violations can result in a license suspension, fine, increased insurance rates, surcharges and, yes, even jail. In fact, although generally not imposed, even most minor moving traffic violations provide for a period of suspension and/or jail time. Unfortunately, unlike other States, New Jersey does not allow a work license, if your license is suspended.

What does a criminal defense lawyer do?

A criminal defense lawyer fulfills many important roles during the course of a criminal case. He or she is is responsible for defending a person who is charged with a crime. He or she speaks on the client’s behalf. As part of their representation, a Criminal Defense Attorney will, where necessary, investigate his client's case, interview witnesses, hire expert witnesses, collect evidence, review the prosecutors evidence and prepare a defense strategy.

Why are criminal defense attorneys important?
